Single vision lenses
Unlike varifocal or bifocal lenses, single vision lenses have just one prescription to correct one thing, for example if you’re long-sighted or short-sighted. They’re often used for one purpose, such as driving or reading.
If you’re under 40 and need glasses, you’ll most likely be prescribed single vision lenses. Ask your optometrist whether they’re the right option for you.
Varifocal lenses by Hoya
Our eyes change throughout our lives, and you may notice it getting harder to focus at different distances, especially up close. This is caused by the lens inside the eye becoming less flexible, a condition called presbyopia.
At first the changes can be subtle, and holding things further away or using brighter light may be enough. Gradually, though, reading or looking at a screen can become difficult wherever you hold it. If this sounds familiar, or your eyes feel tired and irritated, it’s time for a thorough eye examination. Your optometrist will assess your vision and advise on the best options for clear, comfortable vision, whatever the task.
About varifocal lenses
Varifocals, also known as progressive lenses, are a convenient answer if you need help at more than one distance. Instead of the two separate areas of a bifocal, they change power smoothly from top to bottom, so one pair works at every distance.
The top of the lens is for distance vision. As you look down, the lens gradually strengthens for intermediate tasks like computer work, and the bottom is set for reading and close-up detail.
Frames for varifocal lenses
Varifocals used to need quite large frames to fit in every area of focus, but advances in lens technology mean even small fashion frames are now suitable.
Not all varifocal designs are the same: some suit driving, some long spells of computer work and reading, and some everyday wear. Our dispensing team will help you choose the right design for your needs.
- One pair for near, middle and far distances
- A smooth change of focus from top to bottom
- Suitable for small fashion frames

Workstyle occupational lenses by Hoya
Just as an ergonomic chair makes desk work more comfortable, Hoya Workstyle occupational lenses support the way you use your eyes when working at home or in the office. Designed for intermediate and near vision, they make work easier and more comfortable.
The difference between varifocal and occupational lenses
Varifocal lenses are versatile and cover a wide range of distances, from near to far, but they aren’t designed for long periods of close focus.
Occupational lenses are made for intermediate and near vision, with a wider field of view at a shorter viewing distance, which makes work and other indoor activities easier and more comfortable.
Benefits of Hoya Workstyle lenses
- A more ergonomic posture for near and intermediate tasks, which can help prevent digital eye strain
- Better visual comfort at near and intermediate distances
- A complete visual solution for people with presbyopia, especially those with a strong reading prescription or who already wear reading glasses
An ideal complement to varifocals
More than ever, we use our eyes at close and intermediate distances. More than half of Europeans use digital devices at work, and 37% of employees use them for more than 75% of the working day. Without the right lenses, this can cause digital eye strain symptoms such as neck pain, headaches or blurred vision.
Workstyle lenses give better focus and a wider field of view at close to intermediate range. They work best as a second pair alongside your varifocals or reading glasses, as they aren’t suitable for driving, sport or other tasks that need distance vision.
Bifocal lenses
As we get older it becomes harder to focus clearly on things close up, usually starting in our 40s. The key sign that you may be developing presbyopia is needing to hold reading material further away to see it clearly.
Bifocal lenses give good vision to people with presbyopia by combining two prescriptions in one lens: usually the upper part for distance, for things like driving, and the lower part for near vision, for reading or using your phone.
Digital, driving and light-reactive lenses
The way we see the world is changing. Between phones, computers, tablets and TVs, many of us spend 8 to 10 hours a day looking at screens.
All that screen time can cause symptoms of digital eye strain, such as tired, irritated eyes, headaches or blurred vision, sometimes in as little as two hours. Switching between devices can make it worse, because the eye muscles never get the chance to relax.
SYNC III digital lenses
Designed to help your eyes relax, with your distance power for everyday use and a “boost zone” at the bottom of the lens that gives extra relaxing power for screens.
EnRoute driving lenses
As roads get busier and we spend longer behind the wheel, our eyes take the strain. Hoya EnRoute lenses are designed for drivers, reducing the stress on your eyes for a more relaxed drive.
Available in single vision and varifocal designs, both with enhanced vision for the road ahead, the dashboard and your mirrors.
Sensity light-reactive lenses
The best of both worlds: virtually clear indoors, darkening when you step outside. One pair of glasses for whatever the weather, with 100% UV protection.
