A good place to start is choosing between a daily or monthly disposable routine. Most people can wear disposable lenses: 85% of patients can be fitted with them. How often you replace your lenses depends on how often you want to wear them, how many deposits your eyes produce, and whether you have allergies such as hay fever. Your optometrist will advise you on the best option.

Options daily disposable contact lenses

Daily disposable contact lenses

Replacing your lenses more often keeps your eyes healthier and more comfortable. Deposits from your tears, such as protein, calcium and lipids, build up on lenses over time, making them less comfortable and raising the risk of infections and allergies. With dailies there’s no cleaning: you put in a fresh pair each morning and throw them away at night.

We stock daily lenses for every budget: convenient, affordable entry-level lenses; lenses that balance comfort, health and value; and high-performance lenses for long, demanding days.

Options monthly disposable contact lenses

Monthly disposable contact lenses

Monthly lenses come in the widest range of prescriptions and are best for full-time wear. You clean and store them each night in a multipurpose solution, which we’ll help you choose, and replace them every month.

Our monthly lenses suit every budget too: entry-level lenses that are easy on the pocket; lenses that balance comfort, health and vision; and high-performance lenses available in a wide prescription range.

Lenses for specific conditions

As well as everyday daily and monthly lenses, we fit specialist contact lenses for particular eye conditions.

Gas permeable lenses

Gas permeable (GP) lenses are today’s rigid, or “hard”, contact lenses. Older hard lenses were made of PMMA, which was uncomfortable and didn’t let oxygen through to the eye. GP lenses, introduced in the mid-1980s, contain silicone, so they’re more flexible and let much more oxygen through, which is better for comfort and eye health.

Compared with soft lenses, GP lenses can give sharper vision, last longer and resist deposits better. They’re easier to clean and can cost less in the long run, although they take a little longer to get used to.

Astigmatism refers to a cornea that is not perfectly round. Today, astigmatism can usually be corrected with soft toric contact lenses.

Much like multifocal spectacles, these have two powers on one lens: one to correct distance vision and the other to correct near vision.

Wearing your lenses safely

Do

  • Keep up your regular eye tests and contact lens check-ups
  • Wash your hands with soap and dry them with a lint-free towel before handling your lenses
  • Clean and rinse monthly lenses after each use (throw dailies away after one wear)
  • Replace your lens case every month, when you replace your monthly lenses
  • Put your lenses in before your make-up, and take them out before removing it
  • Keep spare lenses and an up-to-date pair of glasses with you

Don't

  • Use tap water or saliva to clean or wet your lenses: always use contact lens solution
  • Reuse old solution, or switch or mix solutions
  • Sleep in your lenses unless they're approved for overnight wear
  • Wear lenses for swimming, water sports, showering or in a hot tub
  • Keep wearing lenses if your eye is red, painful or your vision is blurred: take them out and get advice

Contact lens FAQs

Is wearing contacts safe?

When properly cared for, contact lenses can correct your vision safely and effectively. However, if you’re not practising good hygiene, wearing contact lenses can increase your chance of getting an eye infection. Under professional guidance, contact lenses can provide a safe and effective means of correcting vision.

Depending on the lens, the manufacturer and your eye condition, you may need to wear the lens for a different amount of time. You can wear most types of soft, disposable contact lenses for 12 to 16 hours at a time, but you should check with your optician first.

There are certain situations when you should avoid wearing contact lenses to protect your eye health, for example when you have an eye infection, when you’re experiencing allergies or after eye surgery. You should not wear contact lenses while swimming or sleeping, to avoid infections.

Most people can: 85% of patients can be fitted with disposable contact lenses. Your optometrist will check what suits your eyes, prescription and routine at your contact lens appointment.

Daily lenses are the most convenient and hygienic option, with no cleaning, and suit both full-time and occasional wear. Monthly lenses come in the widest range of prescriptions and suit full-time wearers who are happy to clean them each night. If you have allergies such as hay fever, or your eyes produce a lot of deposits, replacing your lenses more often can help. Your optometrist will recommend the best option for you.
