Eye tests at Opticare

Visiting your opticians is as important as visiting your doctor or dentist, so when you book an eye test with Opticare, we make sure it’s a relaxing experience.

We offer two kinds of eye examination, standard and enhanced. Some groups of people, such as children and over-60s, are eligible for free NHS-funded eye tests.

What happens during an eye test?

Here’s what to expect from your appointment, from getting ready to talking through your results.

Before your eye test

Before your appointment, you may want to note down any changes you’ve noticed in your vision and any questions for your optometrist, so you get the most out of your visit. If you wear contact lenses or glasses, please bring them with you, along with the names of any prescription medicines you take.

Our receptionists will welcome you when you arrive. Your optometrist will start by asking about your history and any changes you’ve noticed.

First, your optometrist will examine your eyes closely to look for anything unusual. They’ll then check for changes in your vision, testing how clearly you see at a range of distances and how well your eyes change focus. Eyesight tends to change with age, and your vision may become blurry.

A binocular vision check makes sure your eyes work together to form one clear image. It can pick up problems a standard sight test might miss, such as slow visual processing and difficulty controlling eye movements. It’s especially important for children, as these issues can affect their school life. We rely on binocular vision for most daily tasks, including driving.

On your first visit we’ll also take a retinal photograph, a non-invasive picture that can detect disease and show your general eye health. This is part of our enhanced eye exam.

With the enhanced eye exam you also get our 3D retinal scan (OCT), which takes a highly detailed image of your eye to spot even the smallest changes. It can detect the earliest signs of glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetes-related retinopathy and more.

Your optometrist will explain your results and answer any questions, taking time to talk through the findings in detail. They’ll also give you personal recommendations on the frames and lenses that best suit your needs and lifestyle, so you can make informed decisions about your eye health.

VDU eye checks

More and more of us use computers, tablets and phone screens (VDUs, or visual display units) every day. If you use a computer regularly at work, your employer must make sure you’re not at risk of eye strain. If you’re an employer, our corporate scheme can help you manage your responsibilities and costs.

Our VDU eye exam is designed for people who use screens regularly. It’s a full, comprehensive eye examination that looks at all your visual symptoms, whether or not they’re related to screen use.

Glaucoma screening

Glaucoma screening is carried out as part of your eye examination. It helps us make sure you can see well, your eyes work properly together, and they’re healthy and free of disease.

Early detection and treatment are essential to prevent or delay more serious sight problems. Most early forms of glaucoma have no symptoms, so regular screening is important, especially as you get older.

The screening includes

  • Measuring the pressure inside your eyes
  • Examining the optic disc, where the optic nerve meets the back of the eye
  • A visual field assessment
